Notes From A Mobilized Marketer - Taking A Selfie Can Lead To Death. And That's No Bull.

A man died after being gored by a bull in Spain while taking a selfie. The Mirror reported that Spaniard David González Lopez, 32, had his back to the bulls while trying to record the run. He did not see the one that attacked him until it was too late.

“It’s a tragic and stupid death,” Mayoress Elena Fernandez told the newspaper.

Periscope reports that it has 10 million users and the equivalent of 40 years of video is watched each day.

Every minute, Americans exchange 3.6 million text messages and send and receive more than 289,000 photos and videos via MMS, per CTIA.

I disagree with headline saying The Further of Consumer Marketing Is Personal. It's actually the present. Anything less today falls short.

88% of teens say people share too much about themselves online, according to Pew.

Instagram mobile ad revenues will reach $2.81 billion worldwide in 2017, eMarketer forecasts.

Samsung Pay will launch in the U.S. on Sept. 28. Also, Rite Aid reversed course and said that it has begun accepting Apple Pay and Google Wallet. The significance? Something short of cash being gone by the following Tuesday.

Is phygical the worst buzzword I've heard recently? Appsolutely.

On Twitter, I was added to an applewatchlovers list. I wouldn't describe myself that way even under most broad term possible.

I have a record of zero success getting usable walking directions via Apple Watch. The latest was last week in Virginia --it turns out that I needed to take a 5-minute walk. Apple Watch told me it would take 90 minutes.

HTC has cut 15 percent of jobs due to dwindling sales.

Android user loyalty has surpassed the iPhone: Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

Notes From A Mobilized Marketer - The "There's a Text For That" Edition

texting male sofa.jpg

25 percent of married or partnered adults who text have texted their partner when they were both home together, according to Pew. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll pick up the dog poop soon” fits easily in the allotted character limit.

One more – 25 percent of cell phone owners in a marriage or partnership have felt their spouse or partner was distracted by their cell phone when they were together. I would’ve guessed this one is about 80 percent.

An app to help you write like Hemingway? Ernest or Seymour?

Office for iPad is reportedly coming before July. Nudge me if you’ve heard this in previous years.

Study: 78 percent of iPhone owners have ‘blind loyalty’ and will buy anything Apple makes.

Prices are going up for Gogo. Speeds? Not so much or at least so fast.

More than one billion Android devices have been activated and more than 700 million iOS devices sold: Forrester.

HTC is looking to low-end phones as a solution for dramatically fallen sales.

61 percent of shoppers use a smartphone before shopping, spend more on average than those who don't, according to Econsultancy.

Apple is said to have gathered an All-Star team of medical experts, scientists, and designers to build the iWatch. Another report says it may gauge signs of impending heart attack. I wonder how doctors will view this innovation.

An Android tablet for $30 not worth the money? True, according to revered tech reviewer Walt Mossberg, who said the Optik 2 is product that doesn’t even do core functions properly.

American Express has added a new live video chat feature to its iPad app.

New to the Sears ShopYourWay app is the ability to buy via mobile, then pick up the item at the nearest retail outlet within five minutes of parking outside the store.

Notes From A Mobilized Marketer: The Disconnected Edition

130501095557-digital-detox-camp-grounded-story-top.jpg

People paid hundreds to unplug at a tech-free camp. Would you go? Could you withdraw? Restraint isn't my strong suit.

A Forbes piece asks, “Has The Smartphone Boom Peaked?” I believe that it is premature with 1st timers coming onboard. I met many during recent travel.

Another Headline: “Why Old People Get So Angry When You Use Your Phone During Dinner”.  I spent a week around old people using smartphones at the table.

A report says that Siri is about to get a lot faster. Speed has never been problem for me - accuracy remains an issue.

A video was introduced advising us when to call versus when to email. What’s a call?

DISH and Southwest Airlines have brought free, live and on-demand TV to smartphones & tablets on WiFi flights. Gogo’s reaction? No-no.

Vine has gone from the top iPhone app to losing out to the newly video-enhanced Instagram. Fast, fast changes in mobile.

Google interns in the Bay Area are paid $6,000 a month, fed, and don't need an automobile. Sign me up.

HTC lost $395 million in value as its share price plunged to a 7-year-low after disappointing 2Q earnings.

Back to school ads have started. Too early? No. Wise marketers are already working on mobile campaigns for the holiday season.

35 percent of users are consuming 90 percent of data on mobile: McKinsey. Those numbers are not a surprise.

Advertising Age asked “Will the Next Hot Agency Title be 'Professional Vinographer'?” No.

85 percent in a survey of mobile users in China said convenience was more important than saving money while shopping. Really? Question is vague because there has to be a line that could be crossed.

Notes From A Mobilized Marketer - The Like and Tweet Edition

Smartphone users check Facebook 14 times a day. That’s when they are not tweeting.

Anyone other than me think it was a mistake to bring the first new BlackBerry without a physical keyboard? Touchscreen is me-too.

It's not a T-Mobile contract - it's an Equipment Installment Plan. Wasn't this going to be dead simple?

In-app purchase revenue has hit records: 76 percent Of U.S. iPhone app revenue, 90 percent in Asia. Not just any apps - games.

54 percent of retailers see mobile as biggest growth area. The others are destined to fail.

According to eMarketer, Twitter will earn $308.9M in 2013 mobile ad revenue -- more than they earned in 2012 total, from any ad type.

An analyst says that the iPhone 5 got five times as many tweets as the Galaxy S4. Meaning what? Little to nothing.

IDC: tablet sales grew 78.4 percent year over year in 2012. They are expected to pass desktop sales in 2013, portable PCs in 2014.

Apple plans to triple the number of authorized resellers in India by 2015. That could coincide with a cheaper iPhone.

News that an Australian business is charging $5 to "fight" showrooming was trending but it won't create a trend. It more likely will put the company out of business.

From the Wall Street Journal no less came a feature on the Mets PR director it calls a "butt dialer" for inadvertently placing mobile calls.

JetBlue plans to offer fast onboard Wi-Fi free of charge. Hopefully that’s the start of a trend.

HTC is no longer "quietly brilliant" in its marketing. It will be louder. As for brilliant, we'll see.

Young Americans send almost ten times as many texts as Americans over 55. What's noteworthy is that the 55+ set texts.

Notes From A Mobilized Marketer - The "Donate To Elect A President" Edition

One in 10 has donated via mobile, the Pew organization says. As for just donating to presidential campaigns, only 1 in 100. Makes sense. Disasters push more people to act. Likely, some would view the state of America as a disaster.

Saying no one is succeeding with mobile is in the same category as saying everyone is. It’s flat out wrong.

Holiday messaging is all over brick and mortar retail before Halloween. Shoppers can limit exposure by not going in. But what about holiday ads on mobile? Will consumers welcome them or be turned off?

HTC’s sales problems in one statement? More BlackBerry devices are being sold.

Among Americans who read e-books, those under 30 are more likely to read e-books on mobile or PC than on an e-book reader, including Kindles and tablets, according to Pew.

What's your preference? I can point you to a story on Apple having no chance versus Pandora or one that says the battle will be easy. Each has an element of linkbait.

27 percent of showrooming shoppers will likely make a holiday purchase using a smartphone or tablet while out shopping, according to Accenture.

Samsung shipped more smartphones in Q3 than any company in history with profit up 91 percent year over year. No supply issues here.

Last I looked, there were over 638,000 Facebook likes to an AT&T customer's complaint about her inability to use Facetime over the carrier network with "unlimited" data plan. She was being forced to change to a family plan.

The Windows Store officially opened with more than 7,873 apps, a story said. Give or take, eh?

Here’s a headline on supposed unintentional clicks on mobile ads - Your Fingers Are Fatter in the Morning. That’s dumb with no backup proof.

The biggest non-story around the iPad Mini? Don't buy now because the price will come down and you'll feel burned. Nah, that’s the nature of all tech.

Notes From A Mobilized Marketer: Hey, Pass The Pink Nail Polish

Nokia says its plan to sell pink nail polish to match the pink Lumia 900 is about "pampering". It's more about being a buzz generator – and it’s working.

During the Samsung trial, we learned that the iPhone was designed to better the "dumbed down" web experience out there on other mobile devices. I always thought that was the original aha – no more endless waiting for pages to load.

Yes, I opted in but six texts from the Obama campaign in fewer than 10 days is way too much. Imagine the flow in the fall.

It’s good to see that Mitt Romney will announce his VP running mate via mobile but app, rather than opt-in text messaging, reduces reach and opt-in potential.

HTC better hope that rumor that it will make a Facebook mobile phone is true. It forecasts a 23 percent revenue drop in the meantime.

Sixty percent iPad web traffic in the U.S. comes from the iPad 2. It shows that the third generation upgrades weren't enough for many to switch. I’m in that group.

Facebook’s impact on mobile is questioned every day. Consider over the last month, it has driven folks to the App Store & Google Play about 150 million times.

One more on the Facebook factor: 7,000 different mobile devices access Facebook every day.

Almost half of the Internet video NBC is serving this Olympics is going to mobile devices and tablets.

There is word of a "supersized" Samsung Galaxy Note. The phablet (I hate that word) gets phatter.

Nearly 1 in 4 Linkedin users accesses only via mobile. The company says that "monetization extends beyond advertising".

Pew says that spam is one of biggest frustrations with mobile devices. Have I just been lucky to not been hit with many?

We’re witnessing the marriage of mobile & house-hunting: a user of Zillow on mobile is three times more likely to contact an agent than a user on PC.

The headline says that the global smartphone market has stalled. The ramifications for marketers? Reconsider feature phone users.
